What Is a Peptide, Actually?

A peptide is a short chain of amino acids — the same building blocks that make up proteins, just fewer of them strung together. Your body makes and uses peptides constantly: insulin, oxytocin, and glucagon are all peptides your body produces naturally to regulate everything from blood sugar to social bonding.

Here's the part that gets lost in most online discussion: "peptide" is a category, not a claim. Saying something "is a peptide" tells you almost nothing about whether it's safe, effective, legal to sell, or backed by evidence — it just tells you its molecular structure. Two peptides can have completely different regulatory status, evidence bases, and risk profiles.

Why this distinction matters

Semaglutide and BPC-157 are both peptides. One has been through large randomized controlled trials and is FDA-approved for specific uses under specific brand names. The other is studied almost entirely in animals, with very little human clinical trial data, and is not FDA-approved for any human use. Treating them as equivalent because they share the word "peptide" is exactly the kind of blurring this site exists to prevent.
